Which book character would you like to be?

All this Halloween talk (and a few pumpkin spice lattes) has got me thinking about some of my favorite costumes over the years. When I was eight years old I dressed up as the fiery Swedish girl, Pippi Longstockings from the Astrid Lindgren books. I thought she was the coolest girl ever--smart, sassy, super strong and she lived alone with her pet monkey and horse. I loved that costume, especially since my mom got my hair to stand up on end by inserting wire into my braids.

So now the teen in me thinks Norah from Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan is pretty funky. But of course, the fact that I have already seen the movie and loved Kat Denning, I am even more intrigued by Norah's character. She too is cool, fun, smart and sassy. And since I write mostly young adult novels and am eternally a teen, that is where I will end...

So, if you could be any character from a book, who would you be?

Danielle, I have been Pippi Longstocking on Halloween!!! There must have been a big Pippi Longstocking marketing push back in the day.

I have been to some great Halloween parties for graduate students in English where everyone dressed up as dead authors. Margaret Mitchell wore a classic suit with tire tracks drawn across it. Sylvia Plath wore an apron and oven mitts and had oven grill marks drawn on her cheeks.

As for characters I'd want to be, I mostly read YA contemporary, so people would have a hard time figuring my costume out!

Oh I loved Pippi too! Though I never dressed up as her for Halloween. I've done Alice in Wonderland and this ice princess from a Russian Fairytale I loved when I was younger. I also dressed up as Laura Ingalls Wilder all the time when I was a kid and it wasn't even Halloween!

But I would love to be Weetzie Bat from the Francesca Lia Block books!

Jenn how funny that you were Pippi too! And I love the dead authors party theme!

Steph, you should totally be Weetzie Bat for Halloween!! I guess most people wouldn't know who you were but I think it'd be totally cool!

I grew up in the country and didn't do Trick or Treating or Halloween parties. But when I was teaching, I dressed up like Spiderwoman in a black jumpsuit and black boots with a fake spider tattoo on my cheek. I spread fake spiderwebs around my classroom and handed out plastic spider rings to my students.
